Opal Stevens' Beauty Blogger of the Week: Kia Simpson

I'm very excited to announce this week's "Beauty Blogger of the Week" - the artistically talented and beautiful Kia!  I love her blog and she illustrates all the pictures of beauty products on her blog using watercolors and cosmetics. It's definitely one of the coolest and most unique blogs I've seen and you should definitely check it out - MAKE me UP

How did you get started blogging?
I think like most bloggers, I loved reading blogs. There are so many good ones out there & Not long after I decided I would like to make my own. I wasn't 100% sure what I would blog about, but I knew it would be beauty related. Intertwining Art into my blog was completely unplanned, but I think if you have a passion for something, blog about it!

Favorite Hair Tip or Product?
Because I dye my hair, a good conditioner to keep it looking healthy is really important, but I don't think I have a favourite product/brand. I do like to use Talcum Powder on my roots if they get greasy, it's a great alternative to dry shampoo.

Beauty trend you love?
Brown smokey eyes, my all time favourite look.

Favorite fashion trend?
At the minute I am loving knee length dresses. Inspired by the likes of Kate Middleton & the 50's. However I do like my comfy jumpers/sweaters!

Favorite Health tip?
Exercising should be enjoyable and not a chore, find an activity that you actually want to do!

Life tip?
Your Mother was probably right

What are some of your favorite beauty products?

Bio Oil 60ml 8.99 Renowned for it's quality and versatility. I like to put this on my face once a week before bed, it really helps to hydrate my skin. It also helps improve the appearance of scars, uneven skin tone and ageing skin. One of those must have products.

Kiehls Creme De Corps 27.00 Such a lovely body moisturizer, definitely going in my top 3. This absorbs nicely, it has a thick, luxurious, non-greasy formula and leaves my skin hydrated. Simple yet effective.

Shu Uemura Depsea Water 16.50
This gentle spray mists lightly onto my face, sinks into my skin & leaves it feeling refreshed. They have a range of different aromas, my current fav is lavender. It's great if you skin is looking a bit tired!

Guest Review: Dry Fast And Mega Last Polishes From Wet n Wild

2 teal of fortunes, 1 SaGreena the Teenage Witch, 1 Disturbia (Mega Last), 1 Blue Wants to Be A Millionaire, 1 Saved by the Blue, 2 Teal Or No Teals.

Hey girls! So Friday I got a shipment from Wet n Wild, that contained 8 nail polishes (shown above). Yes, I got the polishes for free, for review, no that does not taint my review what so ever. My reviews are my honest opinion and I'd never change that because of a free product.

So I'm going to start with the Fast Dry polishes, they sent me 7 of them, and what I noticed as soon as I put them on was that they did not smell. Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed with some fast dry nail polishes from other companies, that they were just repulsive! With the Fast Dry polishes, they have no nasty odor, and the application is flawless, the brush gives you a very smooth coat. I couldn't believe the pigmentation too, only one maybe two coats gives you amazing vibrant color.

Wet n Wild also sent me one Mega Last, I had actually purchased an Mega
Last a week ago, in Bite the Bullet and I absolutely loved it. I was so excited when I saw that they sent me Disturbia, Disturbia is a eggplant-plum shade that looks gorgeous with Bite the Bullet. Much like the Fast Dry polishes, Mega Last is extremely pigmented, but it actually dries really fast too. I wouldn't say it dries as fast as the Fast Dry, but I'd say it dries faster than most normal nail polishes.

Bite the Bullet

I really enjoyed trying these polishes out! I'm so excited to add the Wet n Wild, Fast Dry and Mega Last products to my collection, they are fabulous for not only Spring and Summer but also the colder months!

Thanks For Reading!

July Favorites

Skin care products were a big part of my July favorites because I had a really bad breakout this month. I pretty much spent any extra cash on skin products so I could clear up my skin. With these products I was able to almost entirely get rid of my breakout in about a week.

Clean & Clear Astrigent: I love this stuff! I had a really bad breakout on my forehead and on my nose a few weeks ago and this really helped. I would only recommend that you use this if you have oily skin. Even then I would start out with once a day because it can be really drying. Over the first few weeks you can work your way up to 2 or 3 applications a day. I used to have to use 2-3 oil blotting sheets a day and now I only have to use 1 (if that). The best part - it's only about $4 and should last you a month or two. Active Ingredients: Salicylic Acid 2.0%

Neutrogena SkinClearing Oil-Free Makeup: This makeup is really great for acne-prone skin. It's hypoallergenic so it won't clog pores. It controls shine with 0.5% Salicylic Acid and rapidly cuts through oil for fast acne relief. I would also only recommend this for oily skin, because the Salicylic Acid can be a bit drying with other skin types. My shade is medium beige 80.

Olay Professional Prox Facial Cleansing Brush: This brush is really awesome if your skin needs a deep cleaning. It cleanses skin 6 times better to basic cleansing. A lot of people say it's comparable to the Clarisonic, but personally I have no idea because I've never used a Clarisonic. This was definitely another great product that helped me clear up my skin when I had a serious breakout.

Pure Aloe Vera (Barbadensis) Jelly: After using salicylic acid so much even my super oily skin began to dry out. This moisturizer was really helpful. Pure unadulterated Aloe Jelly penetrates quickly to calm and soothe irritated or inflamed skin. Acts as a natural bandage to help the healing of blemished skin. It's a little bit pricey at $16 but it should last a while.

Hoobastank - The Reason: A lot of people say that I listen to really depressing music, but for me it's almost like therapy. It makes me feel better. I think the songs that have this kind of emotion put into them are the most beautiful.

Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing: How could anyone not like this? It is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.

Opal Stevens' Beauty Blogger of the Week: Hannah

I'm very excited to announce this week's "Beauty Blogger of the Week" - the lovely Hannah!  She has a lot of great posts on a wide range of beauty, fashion and health related posts. Everyone should definitely check out her blog Flawed Excellence

How did you get started blogging?
I'm always on youtube, I love the beauty gurus on there and I noticed quite a lot mentioned their blogs, so I visited a few and liked what I saw so I thought, "Hey why can't I do that?". So I did, and I'm really enjoying it.

Favorite Hair Tip or Product?
One hair product that I swear by is the Aussie Three Minute Miracle. I use it once every 1-2 weeks and it leaves my hair so soft! And it's also part of Aussies heat defense range, so win-win!

Beauty trend you love?
At the moment, I'm really liking neutral make up but with a really bright lip, like a red or candy pink.

Favorite fashion trend?
I'm really loving the tribal/aztec prints. I've always liked a bold print and i love these especially.

Favorite Health tip?
Well, the obvious is to drink lots of water. Good for the skin and body. I've actually gotten into eating fruit and veggies as snacks, you know, apples, grapes, lettuce, bananas etc.

What are some of your favorite beauty products?
L'Oreal Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover. It's gentle but still removes all traces of make up.

Barry M Nail Paints. They come in a range of fab colours and don't chip easily.

Maybelline Great Lash Blackest Black Mascara. I have quite long eyelashes naturally, so this mascara emphasizes that and makes them thicker.

Bourjois’ Chocolate Bronzer. I just think it's a really great bronzer and it smells absolutely yummy!

Collection 2000 16 Hour Wear Concealer. It only costs £4 and it's one of the best concealers I've ever used. It covers brilliantly.

Urban Decay Naked Palette. Who doesn't love this product? It has such great colors that are brilliant for everyday and evening looks.

Guest Post: Tips For Treating Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

How To Treat Oily Skin

One of the main causes of acne is excessive oil on the surface of the skin. If not washed away, oil can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts. The causes of oily skin can be dietary, hormonal, or genetic. Here are a few things your should know about treating this skin type:

Causes of Oily Skin

Believe it or not, the oil on your skin actually serves a purpose. It keeps the skin naturally healthy and moisturized. Those that a have more oil will have fewer wrinkles later on in life, and suffer less effects of aging on the dermis. Removing excess oil is important, but harsh cleaners can overly dry the skin and make it look leathery or prematurely aged.

Oily skin has its roots in several different causes. It can result from the consumption of too many fried foods, from excessive hormones like testosterone, or genetics. Even the weather has an effect it. Some people have reported excess oil and breakouts in the winter months. In this case the skin's oil content can become increased when it is trying to compensate for a lack of moisture. Hormonal changes in women have also been known to change the oil content on the skin.

OTC Products to Cleanse the Skin

Keeping your face clean is important to reduce breakouts. Most doctors recommend cleansing twice a day without harsh chemicals that can overly dry the skin. Most recommend a salicylic acid or glycolic acid wash because benzoyl peroxide can cause dryness, peeling, and irritation. They also recommend using only your hands to wash your face; washcloths can irritate the skin and cause inflammation. There are also a few relatively unknown acne treatments that are inexpensive, but also very effective at removing oil and reducing acne. Treatments like hydrogen peroxide or witch hazel are cheap, but can kill bacteria and dry the skin without irritation.

Medicated pads that are treated with salicylic acid or glycolic acid can target excess oil. These are usually used to treat specific spots like the nose or chin. They do not have enough cleansing medication to treat the entire face, but can be good if you have a particularly oily spot. Blotting papers may be of benefit as they have no harsh chemical additives, they are simply meant to remove oil and reduce shine. You can press them against any area on your face to remove the oily sheen.

Oil Containing Sunscreens

Certain types of oil based moisturizers or sunscreens can cause problems for oily skin. Your best bet is to use a water based sunscreen and moisturizer that is not "waterproof". This way, you are still protecting your skin from the sun, without adding to the oil production or clogging your pores unnecessarily.

Clay Masks

A great tool to treat oily skin is a clay mask. Applying the mask once or twice a week can help to draw excess oil from the skin, and keep your pores open. The great thing about clay masks is that they are very effective at removing oil without causing excessive dryness or peeling. This is usually one of the top recommendations by dermatologists for this skin type.

There are many over-the-counter products to soak up oil and reduce the shine. Remember that your skin is an organ that needs maintenance to stay healthy and free of blemishes. Harsh scrubs and treatments may temporarily reduce oil, but can cause redness and irritation. If you feel unsure about how a particualr skin treatment, consult with a dermatologist.
